Midwest US-China Association The Chinese are poised to expand internationally and the Midwest US-China Association (MWCA) seeks to promote the 12-state central region of the United States as an investment destination. China invested almost $7 billion in foreign markets in 2005 and that government has recently predicted that such investments would grow 22% per year and could reach $60 billion by 2010. Its ‘champion’ companies such as Lenovo (computers), Haier (appliances), and Wanxiang (auto parts) will soon be joined by others as they seek to claim places on the world stage. The Midwest hosts 30% of the Fortune 1000 company headquarters and further provides world leadership in all economic sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, health care, education, finance and professional services. However, the region is too often considered a ‘fly-over’ and its benefits are not known to Chinese companies looking to benefit from the world’s largest market. As a start-up not-for-profit, MWCA was fortunate in its formative stage to have had the pro bono services of MappWare and LBL Strategies. As a class project for Randy Rollinson’s MBA students, MWCA developed its strategic plan and was able to identify and clearly articulate its mission and goals. With this assistance, MWCA was able to assume a leadership position in regional economic development organizations throughout the United States. Additional information regarding MWCA can be found at www.MidwestUSChina.org or by contacting its President, John Rogers. |
